This math problem was Viral in Japan for a funny reason. Through a recent study it was found out that 60% of the people aged in their 20s could solve this problem – good enough right? but that’s a decline from 90% in the 1980s.
Why is the Viral Math Problem difficult to solve in 2016?
The reason behind this decline is the use of technology – mostly calculators here, from the start of a very young age. This is a simple math problem, but with calculators being easily available from every phone to every internet makes the brain quite incompetent to solve it.
However enter this problem in the calculator and it won’t give you the right answer – or you do not need a calculator for this? Well that would be true if you knew order of operations a math skill taught in 4th grade, that is when you were 9 years old.
